SELF PORTRAIT AS ART
One of the exercises I had to do during my third year of the Painting course was a self-portrait. Parameters were wide open and we could choose to work with whatever medium we thought was appropriate. So I chose to combine photography and installation.
It was quite easy at the time to find good reproductions of art works with which I identified. I photographed some of them and put them side by side with found pictures of myself in diferent angles and contexts. The aim was to show how similar both images were in each set – both in composition and mood – even if separated for almost four hundred years.
In order to evoke some kind of mistery and “aura”, all the pictures were presented inside of wooden boxes lined with red velvet. The ensemble was installed in a specific place in the Faculty of Fine Arts, a corridor full of dark green cabinets with books.
