The representation of the body in Art History has always been a subject of great interest to me. During the third year of my Painting course I felt very influenced by the works of Caravaggio and other great masters of the 17th century, who painted the human figure with sharp contrasts of light and dark.
In order to create that kind of theatrical atmosphere, I took some photographs of a nude female model using a single light source. But because I wasn’t at all interested in portraiture or identity, I left her face and head out of of the frame.
These three sketches, made from reference to the pictures, are in watercolour and pencil.
